The days of falling asleep to sitcom reruns and waking up to your very specifically chosen gentle iPhone alarm are temporarily over when you’ve got a newborn baby. Instead, you’ll probably be waking up every few hours to somebody crying. It’s either you or the baby, mama.

As beautiful and wonderful it is to finally introduce your brand new baby to your life, it’s no secret that the first few months postpartum aren’t necessarily easy. These weeks will be spent getting your baby accustomed to life outside the womb and yourself accustomed to motherhood.

You know people often talk about how joy is found in the “little things”? We have to agree–and we think good quality postpartum pajamas are a small way to treat your tired body while you bond with your baby.

Keep reading for our collection of postpartum pajama recommendations.

It’s My Postpartum & I Can Cry If I Want To

Postpartum life brings its own set of changes, struggles, and objectives. In fact, many refer to the first few weeks as the “fourth trimester.” This period is both the most awesome and intimate experience and potentially the most challenging.

Keep reading for a quick overview of what to expect during this infamous fourth quarter:

  • Expect some abdominal pain - You may experience some pain in your lower abdomen as your uterus shrinks back to its average size. Breastfeeding can also trigger this pain as this meal delivery service releases a chemical that contracts the uterus.
  • Constipation - A super common symptom in the postpartum period is constipation. This might be due to experiences during childbirth or even a subconscious fear of triggering physical pain in a tender, recovering area of your body.
  • Hormone changes - Adjustments in your hormone levels may cause varying symptoms, such as extra sweating or light hair loss. As your estrogen climbs back up, these symptoms fade away.
  • Body Swelling - Even postpartum, your body is going to hold on heavily to water because of an increase in the hormone progesterone. The swelling in the hands, feet, and legs usually only lasts about a week after giving birth.
  • Bleeding & discharge - It’s also common to experience vaginal bleeding and discharge. This is your body’s way of expelling the excess blood and tissue used to nourish your new baby.

PJ Party

After a long nine months of growth and change and the birth of your baby, your body is going to require patience as it recovers and rebuilds. Settle into your mini rehab vacay with some cozy, quality postpartum pajamas.

Nursing Tee

You may as well consider a good nursing tee one of your staple pajama pieces. If you’re able and choose to breastfeed, you will be spending a considerable amount of time nursing your newborn. A nursing tee is an easy way to stay comfortable and still cater to your baby.

A good nursing tee should be made of high-quality cotton or jersey to keep you cool and be easy on your skin. Most importantly, it should have an accessible slit for easy, on-demand feeding. We wish we could still be fed on-demand, but that’s a different conversation.

Nesting Pants

The best companion to your jersey nursing tee would be the Hatch Collection’s Jersey Nesting Pants. These pants are as soft as they come and extra loose and roomy for your sensitive, recovering body.

Good pajamas are loose but still cling in the right places, and these pants do both with the added benefit of also making you look chic with their cropped leg cut.

The Golden Standard

A classic cotton, long-sleeve buttoned-up pajama set has to be the golden standard for pajamas, right? Don’t cut yourself short with all the nursing and nesting gear; you deserve the luxury of nice 90s movie main character style pajamas, too.

Ideally, the pajamas feature a classic or kitschy pattern. We like florals and polka dots. When you finally put the baby to bed for the night, you can slip into your set, act like the cameras are rolling, and eat ice cream straight out of the carton.

Catch Those Zzzs, Mama

We know recovery won’t look the same for everyone, and your postpartum journey may not be easy. One thing we do know, though, is that there’s no feeling like getting into pajamas that look good and feel better after a long day. Invest in yourself and find the perfect postpartum pajamas for you.
